For 3 weeks we lived in construction site conditions on a large, unfenced plot of land where we were building our house. We stayed there out of necessity, because we already had things and materials there that needed to be guarded. Our team of workers had gone home while the floor dried.
Before going there, the child had no problems with urination. At almost 5 years old, he was holding it all night, he was doing well in the morning, all good and beautiful. I had taken care to wake him up at night to put him to the potty. He was already about 2-3 weeks old when I got rid of his care.
A few days after we moved to the new location, not immediately, a few days later and I'll tell you why, he started to pee in bed at night. So much that he made a puddle on the mattress. Even if I woke up, put him to the potty, he still did it in bed. Almost every night. I was in despair. I was tired of airing the beds and drying the pants. I sent his dad home to get a change of clothes because I ran out. I didn't have a washing machine, I was tired of rinsing by hand.
We've been home for a few days now, the problem stopped as soon as we got there. I sat and thought and turned the situation around and here are the conclusions.
Excessive urination = territorial marking conflict.
Possible causes:
1. Being a new place, he felt the need to mark it. New house, new bed. I don't think that was it though because it's not the first time we've slept there and secondly the problem didn't appear from the first night but about 3 nights after.
2. The most plausible explanation - territorial marking conflict taken over from me. He is very close to me as a mother and I think my conflict was his too. What exactly happened? We moved on Friday morning. On Sunday night between 1:30 and 2 am, our well pump was stolen by unknown perpetrators who entered our land and had the courage to come 50m from the house where the well is located. We were woken up by the dogs, but not having strong flashlights and not knowing what was happening, we left the house, but we did not go up the hill to see why the dogs were moving in that direction. We thought they must be animals/other dogs, etc.
After this situation, I started to sleep very badly, not feeling safe, starting at every barking of the dogs. The child from about the next night started to wet the bed at night. So, my desire to mark my territory was transmitted to him as well. At one point I was talking to my husband - it was 1:30 in the morning and, to top it off, a few minutes after that time I noticed that the bed was wet again!!! Why exactly 1:30? My territory invaded by thieves :)
Now we are OK. Everything returned to normal as soon as we returned home. In about 2 weeks we have to go there again... and the fence is still not ready. I need to calm down, not feel threatened and invaded anymore because I will have to wash the beds again ...
